About Senkow Builders

Theodore L. (Ted) Senkow (August 23, 1912 – March 3, 2001) was well known and respected in the New London County area and throughout the state of Connecticut as a quality builder and developer. He graduated from Chapman Tech.

Founder Ted Senkow

Mr. Senkow built his first house in 1933 while working as a carpenter for H. R. Douglas & Sons. During his apprenticeship, he did finish carpentry work to the Chapel at Connecticut College, apprenticed as a mason on the barracks at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and rebuilt the boardwalk at Ocean Beach following the hurricane of 1938.
In 1938 he left H. R. Douglas & Sons and started Senkow Builders. Over the next 60 years he built over 1400 homes and nine subdivisions in Waterford, CT. Mr. Senkow's final two projects were the completion of a new subdivision in Lisbon, CT and a smaller project in Griswold, CT.

In 1958, he founded the Builders Association of Eastern Connecticut and served as the association’s first president. He was a Past President of the Home Builders Association of Connecticut, and a Life Director of the National Association of Home Builders. He was elected to the Connecticut Home Builders Hall of Fame for distinguished service from 1950 to 1959. In 1998 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Builders Association of Eastern Connecticut for his distinguished service. In 2008, he was posthumanously awarded the Housing Hall of Fame award from the Builders Association of Eastern Connecticut.

Mr. Senkow was also very active in his community. He supported several youth baseball teams and gave generously to various arts and charities. He served on the Waterford Representative Town Meeting for many years as a board member and his sound thinking and wisdom were always solicited. He was also a life member of the New London Lodge of Elks and the Quaker Hill Fire Department. In 1991, Mr. Senkow was selected as Waterford’s Man of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the community. One of his other many honors was when in 1998, then Governor, John Roland proclaimed November 21st, Theodore L. Senkow day in the State of Connecticut.

He was known for his wisdom and his wit. One of his favorite words of wisdom, which he freely passed on to many people, was “A fast penny beats a slow nickel any day.”
In 1997 Mr. Senkow passed the ownership and day-to-day operation of the family owned business to his daughter Diane. Today, Senkow Builders is still, one of only a handful of woman owned and managed construction companies in the State of Connecticut.
